The region and further afield

There are numerous fascinating places to visit in the region, but the pick of the crop and a must on anyones itinerrary must be a visit to the city of Carcassone.

Set high up on a hill, Carcassonne’s ancient walled city is Disneyworld-perfect. This fairytale collection of drawbridges, towers and atmospheric cobbled streets was reputedly the inspiration for Walt Disney’s The Sleeping Beauty, and it’s a must-see on any trip through this part of southern France. Its medieval core, the cité, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997.

For a list of other places to explore, take a look at the individual points of interest on the following map, each will link to further information, too numerous to list individually here.

some of my favorites in addition to Carcassone

Narbonne - fascinating town with magnificent cathedral and dont forget to have lunch at the market!

Ax-Les-Thermes - Ski resort just over an hour away and a beautifull drive to get there. Also houses a magnificent thermal Spa complex

Gruissan town and Gruissan plage. Delightfull seaside town and sandy beach.

Rennes-le-chateaux and the Abbey, with its many conspiracy theories and links to the "Da Vinci code!

Maybe just as strange the mountain of Buggarach.According to a prophecy/internet rumour, which no one has ever quite got to the bottom of, an ancient Mayan calendar has predicted the end of the world will happen on the night of 21 December 2012, (it didnt!)

Mirepoix - The Mirepoix market is held on Monday mornings. It's many people's favorite market in France. Not only will you find antiques, clothing, wine, and trinkets to spend your money on, you'll see local food specialties as well. You will also find local musicians performing at the surrounding cafes and restaurants.
